Night of Nostalgia in Uruguay

A full Moon will be seen tonight, but not a soul on the streets of Uruguay.   If you wander around in  Punta Del Este and Montevideo you will see empty restaurants at high peak hours. Why is this happening?  Nobody goes out 2 days before the Night of the Nostalgia on the 24th of August 2013.

Uruguayans are getting prepared to dance until dawn this August 24th 2013 in the traditional Night of Nostalgia, one of the biggest parties of the year. Despite the cold, regardless of age the call  is to remember oldies while eating, drinking and dancing the night away.

The government estimates about 700,000 people of all ages will join the Night of Nostalgia, almost one third of the population, making this, the most popular celebration of Uruguay, on the eve of the holiday National Independence Day

Origins of Night of Nostalgia

Since 1978 , this party has become a tradition. It all started when a well know radio on the late 70´s launched an invite with music from the 70´s, ever since then it has become a memorable event.

In recent weeks, the radio began broadcasting ‘oldies music from past decades, the stores offer everything from costumes to lingerie or suggestive cotillion, everyone wears fancy dresses from the 70´s.   Shops are buzzing with women looking for something that can make them look stunning.

Signs like: “Book ahead of time if you want a hair style” are commonly seen on hair saloons

Night of Nostalgia parties can be found anywhere, at restaurants, hotels, casinos, nightclubs, ballrooms and even at gymnasiums. For 2013 a total of 400 Night of Nostalgia parties are estimated across the country.  Most parties offer  dinner and drinks but some even offer DJ´s tributes and video screens to play video clips of songs from the Bee Gees, Credence, Clearwater Revival, Queen, Abba and the Village People, to name a few.

“Uruguay, the only country where nostalgia becomes a party,” a video posted on the website of the Ministry of Tourism, which proves that the legendary Night of Nostalgia has become the brand of the country, promoted abroad by the Secretary of State of Uruguay since 2004.
