Quaint Beach Town Manantiales

GENERAL

Manantiales, the sister village of La Barra, is an ancient fishing village and holiday resort. Originally, the buildings were modest and the town’s name comes from a water spring located at the town’s eastern end. This water spring also gives its name to the adjacent subdivision, known as El Chorro and Punta Piedras. In the past, Manantiales was primarily a fishing port and a summer resort for the residents of Maldonado and San Carlos.

In 1965, with the opening of the bridge that connected La Barra and Punta del Este, people started acquiring and building homes in Manantiales. Many international Jet-Set members were purchasing farms of at least 5 acres along Route 104.

Situated at km 165.5 on Route 10, Manantiales is strategically located halfway between Punta del Este and José Ignacio. In just twenty minutes, you can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Punta del Este or the serene and sophisticated ambiance of José Ignacio. Spanning about 40 blocks, this small resort town faces the Atlantic Ocean.

The beaches in and around Manantiales are popular destinations during the busy summer season, attracting a large number of tourists and people owning properties in the area. The Paradores host numerous significant events. To the north, a few blocks away, you can find peaceful residential areas that offer a quiet retreat from the noise. Additionally, El Chorro provides an alternative with tranquil surroundings, and the houses built on the small hill lots boast stunning sea views.

BEACHES IN MANANTIALES

The beach located at the beginning of Manantiales is famously known as Bikini Beach. It features a wide stretch of coarse sand and small rocky bays that provide natural protection. However, caution is advised as the sea can be deep and dangerous due to strong return currents. Although the landscape is magnificent, it is not what has made Bikini Beach renowned. Rather, it has become a preferred destination for the youthful jet-set. A stroll along Bikini Beach offers the opportunity to spot personalities from around the world sunbathing and either attempting to evade or simply embracing the attention of paparazzi.

On the eastern side, you will find Playa El Chorro, which is less bustling in comparison. The beach bars in the area constantly organize activities to ensure the summer season is filled with excitement and recreational opportunities for visitors.

SHOPPING

Manantiales, with its charming atmosphere, boasts a few stores that remain open throughout the year. For instance, Velas de la Ballena, a candle store, welcomes customers regardless of the season. Additionally, furniture stores such as Monica Melhem and the modern Bo Concept offer their services to residents and tourists all year long. When summer arrives, the center of town becomes even more vibrant as designer fashion stores open their doors, creating a delightful shopping experience. For a wider range of options, a quick 5-minute drive to La Barra is recommended, although it should be noted that many shops there also close during the winter months.

It’s worth mentioning that the former Jose Ignacio store, Mutate, has made its move to Manantiales. Under the ownership of Santiago Barriola and Gonzalo Massa, the store offers a range of products including men’s and women’s clothing, Mid Century Modern furnishings, vintage design objects, jewelry, and other accessories. Additionally, there is an intimate coffeehouse and bar situated in front of the store, furnished in the classic Scandinavian modern style. As you stroll through the different streets, you will also come across numerous small boutiques and art galleries waiting to be discovered.
