Brazil and South Korea Agree to Accelerate Mercosur Trade Deal Talks

KEY POINTS

  • Brazil and South Korea agreed to create a working group to accelerate Mercosur trade deal talks.
  • Brazil also discussed advancing a potential Mercosur-China trade deal with President Xi Jinping.
  • South Korea will send a mission to Brazil for sanitary evaluation of meatpackers, and both countries will expand cooperation in critical minerals.

Brazil and South Korea have agreed to accelerate negotiations for a potential trade deal between the Asian nation and the South American bloc Mercosur, their presidents announced on Monday during a ceremony in Brasília.

According to a report by Gabriel Malheiros in DatamarNews, Brazil has been seeking to expand trade agreements—either bilaterally or through Mercosur, which also includes Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay—to diversify its trade partners amid tariffs imposed by the United States, one of its key commercial partners.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that the two countries agreed to create a working group to accelerate the talks. His South Korean counterpart, Lee Jae-myung, described a potential deal with Mercosur as an urgent matter. Mercosur has recently concluded agreements with the European Union and the four members of the European Free Trade Association (Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway).

In a phone call earlier Monday with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Lula said both leaders supported advancing talks on a potential deal between China and Mercosur. Lula also announced that Brazil will receive a South Korean mission next month for a sanitary evaluation of Brazilian meatpackers. Lee added that the leaders agreed to expand cooperation in the critical minerals sector. The event took place five months after Lula attended a summit with Lee in Seoul.

Strategic Implications for Uruguay

For Uruguay, as a member of Mercosur, the acceleration of trade talks with South Korea and the parallel discussions with China signal a potential expansion of market access and investment flows. These developments could enhance Uruguay’s attractiveness as a stable, trade-oriented economy within the bloc, offering international investors and expats a more diversified and connected business environment. The focus on critical minerals and sanitary evaluations also points to opportunities in Uruguay’s agricultural and mining sectors, reinforcing its position as a reliable partner in global supply chains.
