Uruguay Fuel Prices: Government to Decide September Rates Amid Rising Import Parity

KEY POINTS

  • Uruguay’s government will decide fuel prices for September 2026, with import parity showing a 1.5% rise for gasoline and 14.2% for diesel.
  • If passed through, gasoline could rise about 1% and diesel 24.7%, but the government may use stabilization mechanisms to mitigate the impact.
  • The increases are driven by international prices amid the Middle East conflict, affecting Uruguay’s inflation and economic stability.

The Uruguayan government is set to define fuel tariffs for September 2026 in the coming hours, as international prices remain under pressure due to the Middle East conflict. According to the latest Import Parity Price (PPI) report from Ursea, reference values for both gasoline and diesel increased in August compared to July.

As reported by El Observador, the PPI ex-refinery for Super 95 gasoline, including agrofuels, rose 1.5% in the last moving month (July 26 to August 25). In contrast, common diesel saw a significant increase of 14.2%, maintaining levels close to the highs recorded after the outbreak of the Middle East conflict.

If the PPI rule were applied directly, the price of Super 95 gasoline would rise by approximately 0.87 Uruguayan pesos per liter (about 1%), from the current 88.67 pesos. Diesel 50-S would see a more substantial increase of about 14.5 pesos per liter (+24.7%), from 58.68 pesos.

These projections consider the reference price, stabilization factor, taxes, and assume other chain components remain unchanged. However, the government has historically used available mechanisms to mitigate the impact of international volatility on fuel prices, so a direct pass-through is not guaranteed.

Market Implications for Investors

For international investors and expatriates in Uruguay, fuel price adjustments are a key indicator of inflationary pressure and the government’s approach to managing external shocks. The significant rise in diesel costs could affect transportation and logistics sectors, potentially influencing overall price levels. Uruguay’s strategy of using stabilization mechanisms aims to shield consumers from abrupt changes, but sustained international pressure may test the sustainability of such measures. Investors should monitor these developments as they can impact the country’s macroeconomic stability and the cost of living, which are crucial factors for long-term investment decisions.
