Mercosur Reaffirms Support for Argentina’s Falklands Claim Amid Islanders’ UN Self-Determination Appeal

KEY POINTS

  • Mercosur issued a Special Declaration on June 30, 2026, reaffirming support for Argentina’s sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands.
  • Falkland Islands legislators presented a self-determination case at the UN on June 25, 2026, opposing bilateral negotiations without Islander participation.
  • Uruguay, as Mercosur’s pro tempore president, is tasked with approaching the UN to resume negotiations between Argentina and the UK.

Mercosur has issued a Special Declaration reiterating support for Argentina’s sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands, just days after two Falkland Islands legislators presented a self-determination case at the United Nations. The declaration, signed at the bloc’s 68th Presidential Summit in Asunción on June 30, 2026, backs Argentina’s legitimate rights and calls for renewed bilateral negotiations with the United Kingdom.

According to a report by MercoPress in MercoPress, the declaration was signed by the presidents of Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, and Uruguay, along with Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno. It questions British economic activities in the disputed area and tasks Uruguay, as Mercosur’s pro tempore president, with approaching the UN to resume negotiations. The statement is a reiteration of a position held since the 1996 Declaration of Potrero de los Funes.

Five days earlier, on June 25, Falkland Islands legislators Dorothy Gould and Michael Goss addressed the UN Decolonization Committee (C24), defending the right to self-determination of the archipelago’s inhabitants. Goss argued that bilateral negotiations between Argentina and the UK without Islander participation amount to a transfer of ownership, not a negotiation. Gould highlighted the community’s self-sufficiency and the 2013 referendum where 99.8% voted to remain a British Overseas Territory.

The two positions reflect incompatible interpretations of UN resolutions. Argentina views the Islanders as a transplanted population and does not recognize their self-determination claim, while the UK and Islanders insist on their right to determine their own future. The UN has examined the dispute for six decades without resolution.

Geopolitical Implications for Uruguay and Investors

For international investors and expats in Uruguay, the Mercosur declaration underscores Uruguay’s active role in regional geopolitics, which may influence its foreign investment climate. While the Falklands dispute does not directly affect Uruguay’s domestic market, it highlights the country’s alignment with regional blocs and its commitment to multilateral diplomacy. Investors should monitor how Uruguay’s pro tempore presidency of Mercosur could shape trade and diplomatic relations, potentially impacting cross-border investment flows and regional stability.
