Alto de la Ballena (www.altodelaballena.com) is a great winery near Punta Del Este. Owner Alvaro Lorenzo and his wife Paula Pivel’s winery is on a rocky hillside plot ten miles from the ocean and produces merlot, aged 12 months in French oak, dry cabernet franc and tannat rosé, as well as an intriguing tannat-viognier.
