The Vatican announced Wednesday that Pope Leo will travel to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17, marking a significant trip for the Catholic leader who previously served as a missionary and bishop in Peru.
According to a report by Jaiveer Shekhawat in Investing.com, the pontiff will spend November 6-8 in Uruguay, November 8-11 in Argentina and November 11-17 in Peru.
Pope Leo, who became the first U.S.-born pontiff last year, also holds Peruvian citizenship. He served as bishop of Chiclayo in northwestern Peru from 2015 to 2023.
During his time in Peru, the pope will visit Chiclayo, Lima, Cusco and Pucallpa. His Argentine itinerary includes Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Lujan. In Uruguay, he will visit Montevideo, Paysandú and Florida.
The Vatican stated that complete itineraries for the visits will be released at a later date.
The last papal visit to South America occurred in 2018, when Pope Francis traveled to Chile and Peru. Francis, who was born in Argentina and became the first pope from the Americas, never visited his home country during his papacy.
