Sintana Energy Secures One-Year Suspension for Uruguay Offshore Block, Advances Argentine Tender

KEY POINTS

  • ANCAP approved a one-year suspension for the AREA OFF-1 block offshore Uruguay, extending the exploration subperiod to August 2027.
  • Chevron, as operator, requested the suspension due to delays in environmental authorization for 3D seismic acquisition.
  • In Argentina, a decree has been published to call for an International Public Tender based on Challenger Energy’s expression of interest for an offshore permit.

Sintana Energy Inc has announced a one-year suspension of the initial exploration subperiod for the AREA OFF-1 block offshore Uruguay, extending the deadline to 23 August 2027. The suspension, requested by operator Chevron Mexico Finance LLC, was granted by Uruguayan state energy company ANCAP due to delays in environmental authorization for the 3D seismic acquisition campaign.

According to a report by Ethan Davis in Directorstalkinterviews, environmental authorization was obtained in early 2026, and the first season of seismic acquisition was completed by the end of April 2026. A second season is scheduled to commence in Q4 2026. The company considers the full acquisition, processing, and interpretation of 3D seismic data essential for making an optimal exploration well drilling decision.

In Argentina, Challenger Energy Group plc, a member of the Sintana group, submitted an expression of interest on 14 February 2025 for an offshore hydrocarbon exploration permit in the North Argentine Basin (CAN-200). On 15 July 2026, Decree 590/2026 was published, instructing the National Secretariat of Energy to call for an International Public Tender based on that expression of interest. Challenger will participate in the process in compliance with Argentine law.

Strategic Implications for Offshore Energy Investment in Uruguay

For international investors and expats monitoring Uruguay’s energy sector, the suspension reflects the regulatory and environmental diligence typical of the country’s stable investment climate. While delays can occur, the structured process—including clear contractual provisions for suspension and a defined path to drilling—underscores Uruguay’s commitment to legal certainty. The ongoing seismic program, backed by a major operator like Chevron, signals continued interest in Uruguay’s offshore potential, which could enhance the country’s attractiveness as an energy investment destination.
